Commonwealth ministers will head to Barbados in June 2010 for the 9th meeting of its kind, and the Commonwealth Women's Network is well into planning for the civil society meeting held just before the ministerial one. Civil society activists and organisers know their work doesn't end when the government one begins. They will also be keen to take up a unique privelege which has helped enrich the focus and debate of the ministerial agenda: every 6th speaker in plenary sessions of the WAMM comes from CSO 'observers' now able to feed their meeting outcomes directly into the ministerial agenda. The first vote of support towards a one-stop UN entity working for progress for the world's women bodes well for gender equality, says the global feminist network for women of the Commonwealth (CWN).

"To say we are relieved to see the outcome of what should have been a relatively straightforward affair is an understatement," says Network chair Nelcia Robinson of the Committee for Development of Women in Kingston.

"The Commonwealth Women's Network had watched with concern the attempts of some member nations to thwart the commitment of the UN towards improving and reforming its work on gender, and to see the urgency and focus with which Commonwealth leaders stepped up to lobby for the positive outcome we saw this week is cause for celebration," says Robinson.

Around 45,000 activists were there for the historic Beijing Declaration and Plan of Action in China in 1995, now the roll call is opening up for the 15-year mark since the UN 4th Conference on Women -- at least, from civil society.
